Brazil: Várzea Alegre Steps Up Preventive Actions by Opening Drainage Channels to Ensure Water Flow

With the start of the rainy season, which traditionally runs from January to May, the City Hall of Várzea Alegre has launched a series of preventive actions to reduce the risk of flooding and minimize the impact of heavy rains in areas historically affected by water accumulation. The main measure currently underway is the opening of drainage channels at strategic points across the municipality to ensure proper rainwater flow.

The interventions are part of the municipal administration’s planning to get through the rainy season more safely, preventing disruptions for residents and protecting homes located in areas considered at risk.

Channels ensure natural water flow

The drainage channel works are being finalized in the Dona Rosinha neighborhood, an area that serves as a natural corridor for water flowing from the Riachinho, Patos, and part of the city center. This location is one of the most sensitive points during the rainy season, as it receives a large volume of water during periods of intense rainfall.

During a technical visit to the area, Mayor Flavinho highlighted the importance of the intervention to maintain the natural flow of water and avoid damage to nearby families.

“This is a natural passage for water. Our goal is to ensure it follows its course without causing problems or putting homes at risk,” the mayor said.

According to City Hall, opening the channels allows water to follow a defined path, preventing blockages, overflows, and damage to urban infrastructure.

Next steps include Varjota and Alto Tenente

After completing the services in Dona Rosinha, municipal teams will move on to the Varjota and Alto Tenente neighborhoods, which also face recurring problems during the rainy season.

In these areas, in addition to emergency actions, the local government is seeking long-term solutions to reduce the impact of rainfall. Mayor Flavinho said negotiations are already underway with landowners to enable the construction of a containment structure.

The structure is expected to help reduce both the volume and the force of water reaching the most vulnerable neighborhoods, lowering the risk of flooding during periods of heavier rain.

“We are not standing still. While the permanent solution is not yet in place, we are moving forward with temporary measures so residents of Várzea Alegre can get through the rainy season more safely,” the mayor emphasized.

Actions focus on the Riacho da Formiga

Preventive actions by the City Hall are mainly concentrated along the course of the Riacho da Formiga, one of the main waterways crossing the municipality and historically linked to flooding in urban areas.

The stream originates in the Serra da Caiana, passes through the communities of Roçado de Dentro and Sítio Formiga, and reaches the urban area through the Varjota neighborhood. Along its route, it crosses major roads such as the BR-230, known locally as Avenida Neném Marinheiro, and the CE-060 on Durval Soares Street.

After passing through these areas, the stream flows into a lagoon and continues toward the Riacho do Machado. During periods of heavy rain, the increase in water volume along this route can cause significant disruption, especially in the city’s lower-lying areas.

Prevention as a priority during the rainy season

The municipal administration stresses that these actions are part of a prevention-focused policy, prioritizing public safety and the reduction of material damage. The opening of drainage channels, combined with the search for structural solutions, aims to provide greater peace of mind for residents during the rainy months.

City Hall continues to monitor critical areas and notes that new interventions may be carried out as needed, always with a focus on protecting families and preserving the urban environment.
